Witching Season

Hot Head Skull candle from CB2 $14.95

My best friend in 5th grade was Nina. She had long frizzy black hair and a laugh that would explode out of her mouth, sending her head flying back. Nina’s grandmother filled her head with romantic, magical stories of witches and spells, which led her to fill my head with them. We became OBSESSED after burying our noses (that were not covered in warts, thank you very much) through L.J. Smith’s trilogy about teen witches, The Secret Circle. We SWORE we made the swings move using our preadolescent spell-casting powers during recess one day. I’ve sort of been keen on the whole spell & magic thing ever since. You don’t have to worry about me sneaking a strand of hair from your locks or anything… yet.

Hometown Glory – Austin, Texas

Lil' Melrose

Me with my sweet bangs and first skateboard at my favorite house in Austin on Jessie street.

When I was two, my sister, mom and I moved from the tiny town of Pleasanton, Texas to Austin, a larger but still small-ish (at the time) liberal city known for its abundant outdoor activities, music, free-spirited & friendly folks, local business love and breakfast tacos. I mentioned breakfast tacos, right?

My childhood was spent making candles at Eeyore’s Birthday Party, exploring my backyard AKA the Barton Creek Greenbelt and walk-running in the Capitol 10,000 (I HAD SHORT LEGS, YOU GUYS!) I learned how to swim in Barton Springs & Deep Eddy, and proudly walked in costume with my dog Rasta in the Pet Parade each year. I couldn’t WAIT to die my hair purple and pierce my nose just like the homeless teenagers who panhandled on The Drag outside of St. Austin’s, the Catholic school I attended in kindergarten.

Though the winds of change took me to San Antonio just before high school, I’ll always have a sweet spot for Austin. It’s a big part of who I am today—the kind of girl who emits a hippie energy at times, enjoys an outdoor adventure and looooves a good tune… but still appreciates a Moscow Mule & party dress every now and then.

I can’t quite shake the sense of having unfinished business in Austin, but maybe that’s a feeling hometowns commonly evoke? “I ain’t lost, just wandering.”  … I’ll let you know when I figure that one out, y’all. For now, enjoy the photos from my most recent trip to Austin. #TexasForever

Los Angeles

Adventures in Los Angeles

A friend of mine (Hey Lauren!) flew to Los Angeles to catch a glimpse of the Van Gogh and Kandinsky exhibit at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. Since I’d never been to the Lacma (shame on me!), I jumped at the chance to join her. We started our day at Monsieur Marcel in the Original Farmer’s Market at the Grove, then scooted over to gaze in awe at the La Brea Tar Pits, before making it to our final destination. I’m already antsy to return for another visit. You can bet I’ll be joining other artsy fartsy Angelenos for Jazz on Friday nights.

The Trolley at the Grove in Los Angeles

The cheese plate, French wine and people-watching at Monsieur Marcel in the Farmer’s Market is hard to beat, y’all.

Texas Road Trip (Part 1)

The Alamo in San Antonio

Earlier this year, my main man and I spent some time in my home state of Texas. We visited Austin, San Antonio and a few spots in-between. Here’s a collection of pics I took with my iPhone and Rebel Canon. Stay tuned for part two of the trip which will include a ridiculous amount of photos from Austin. Enjoy! #Texasforever
