A Day in Silver Lake

Remember that time I went to Silver Lake and walked around with three neato people drinking iced coffee, dipping in and out of shops, eating brunch, laughing over Mimosas (not at Mimosas—I would NEVER), drooling over puppies at the dog park (GIMME) and swearing I would get back in shape (I haven’t) after almost passing out when walking up a steep set of stairs? No? Oh that’s right, because I haven’t told you about it yet! Well I did do all of these things and they were haaaamazing.

I live on the Westside of LA, so of course I never make it to Silver Lake on the Eastside. But Eastside peeps never come over here either so it’s like totally fine. We have an understanding. I always hear how cool Silver Lake is though, so I made it a point to lure Scott into the car to meet a couple of wild and crazy gals for a day of hanging in Silver Lake. We started with brunch at Barbrix, where they offer $8 bottomless Mimosas and free advice (and $1 oysters at the bar on Mondays!)

Awww, you guys!! We were also treated to an incredible view after hoofing it up the The Mattachine Steps, named after gay rights activist Harry Hay.

Larissa had heard of the building before so she confidently ducked her head and walked right in… while Scott, Caitlin and I slowly stepped inside wondering if this was the end. Spoiler alert: It wasn’t. The building is called the Domus Shelter and was brought to life by Materials and Applications. According to the Materials and Applications website, “engineering of Domus is a study of low cost architecture design for present day and future disaster zones and based on Hexayurt Shelter System.” Once inside the Domus, you can sit down and look up at an LED chandelier that glows in response to real-time seismic data. Basically, it’s super cool. You can find out more here.

There are so many great places to visit here. Intelligentsia is a must of course, but in your caffeine haze don’t miss the most amazing flower shop called Clementine. First of all, it’s just so dang adorable. Secondly, the flowers are gorgeous! It’s a wonderful place to lift your spirits… and perhaps pick up a gift to lift someone else’s.

This place is a cheese, wine and fancy food lovers dream. We’ll be back.

Walk down a path to find a gourmet shop filled (filled!) with salts, sugars, spices, chiles and teas. There’s a peaceful little spot outside where you can sit and take it all in.

Cruising Around Marina Del Rey

Who needs dry land when ya got boats, you guys?! Scott and I took a short trip down the road to Marina Del Rey to celebrate Memorial Day and our friend Jenni’s birthday. (Hi Jenni!) We met a group of pals at the Fisherman’s Village, a cute little spot with shops, restaurants and a lighthouse. (It’s also known for being the former home to a famous banana stand.) We all chipped in to rent a boat from Marina Del Rey Boat Rentals. At only $15 per person, it was quite the deal! We spent a couple hours cruising around the Marina, snacking, sipping and waving at fellow boaters and paddle boarders. There were some shimmies involved too. And bows. And Rosé. If you’re ever in the area, grab some friends, pack a cooler and get ready to squeal and giggle at a few seals. Pro tip: Do not leave a cup of Rosé resting on the table. It will fall over into your lap.

Where to drink, dine & sleep in Solvang

Solvang

I first discovered Solvang, California during a camping trip at Pismo Beach. My friends insisted we stop through this adorable Danish paradise on the way back to LA. I was completely enamored with the quiet streets shaded by beautiful trees, small town charm & hospitality from local shop & restaurant owners and of course the wines from the Santa Ynez Valley. I made a mental note to return, and unlike a million other mental notes that never come to fruition, this one did. Scott and I took the 2-ish hour drive up the coast a few months back. Scroll down to view photos of our trip & a few places and people you must visit when you take yours.

We stayed at the Hamlet Inn, a cute hotel that’s part of the Shelter Social Club family. Its location couldn’t be better. You can walk to any restaurant, tasting room and shop in town, and it’s right across the street from Paula’s Pancake House and the Solvang Brewing Company. How cute is the room and those bikes?!

After dropping our bags, we were anxious to explore. We didn’t get very far because our lunch destination was also right across the street. (See? Perfect location!) The Succulent Café offers a relaxing setting to enjoy savory sandwiches, salads filled with ingredients from local farms, a charcuterie bar and fresh lemonade. The cheese plate and spicy fried chicken sandwich made with Point Reyes blue cheese & Sriracha ranch were both ridiculously good. Stop by for lunch (closed on Tuesdays) for a casual grab & go type of experience, or for dinner for full-service fanciness. Breakfast is also offered on weekends.

After lunch, we strolled through town, admiring the Danish culture and meeting friendly local horses and dogs along the way.

Royal Oaks was our first wine stop thanks to the recommendation and free tasting vouchers from the Hamlet Inn. After wine, we skipped over to the Solvang Restaurant walk-up window for a taste of the town’s famous treat: Aebleskivers. Delish!

In need of a pick-us-up, we sipped on espresso outside of Cafe Dolce. This lil’ shop also offers fresh juices and other sweet treats.

Now for the best part of the trip! I met Amanda, one of the owners of Cali Love Wine and lead singer of Spun Honey, on that first trip to Solvang. When I told her we were coming back for a more legit visit, she was kind enough to give me so many amazing recommendations on what to do in her sweet town. We had so much fun hanging with her and Jill. Thanks again for showing us around, new friends!

You must stop into Cali Love on your trip to Solvang. I mean, their tasting room is a guitar museum! And their wines? Yum. I think it was the Pink Moon Syrah Rosé that sealed the deal on me joining my very first wine club. I can’t wait to get my fall shipment! Stop by to enjoy a few sips during the day (closed on Tuesdays) or on Saturday nights for live music! Yahhoo, can’t wait to get back to see these sweet faces!
