Movies at Hollywood Forever Cemetery

Scott and I recently went to watch a movie at the historic Hollywood Forever Cemetery. This is one of my favorite things to do in LA. Like, the best. Cinespia is the awesome company that puts on these really well organized events. Every May, they release a line-up of movies that are so good, they usually sell out within a week or two. We’ve been to see Scream (where the audience screamed in unison), Back to the Future and now, Animal House. Here are my favorite things about movies at Hollywood Forever Cemetery:

Food and dranks: You should definitely pack a picnic, blankets, a tarp to put under your blanket, pillows and wine and/or beer. We saw a group of peeps making Sangria while waiting in line. My heroes. Read up on some other good tips here.

People-watching paradise: The people who attend these events are super friendly, fun and usually dressed in some sort of costume. Scott and I wore togas and we spotted a few College tees. I wish I could stare at everyone in line without them thinking I’m a total weirdo. (I am.)

Comfy: As long as you bring a hoodie and some blankets (it gets cold), you’re all set! There isn’t a bad place to sit… unless you’re sitting in the Porta Potties, which are surprisingly clean! Scott and I usually get there 30-45 minutes early so we can nab a spot front and center. It’s my favorite spot, but even if you’re in the back, you’re good. The film is projected onto a huge wall of a mausoleum and the speakers ensure you can hear every line. (Unless you’re chomping on crackers.) Oh, and there are live DJs and a slide show of beautiful vintage movie posters from Film Art Gallery to entertain you while you get your picnic and blanket situation set up.

Easy to get there: Some people do the whole parking thing, but Scott and I like to Uber. No parking, no problem! Plus if we have a couple glasses of wine, we know we’re safe Ubering back home. Don’t drink and drive, duh.

So much more: Seriously, top five favorite thing to do in LA. There’s so much more to love. The grounds are gorgeous and you can stick around a bit after the flick to check out the graves of famous residents like Johhny Ramone, Vampira, Mel Blanc and more. Also, the photo booth is worth waiting in line for.

Visit the Cinespia website to buy tickets to upcoming movies (only $15!), and definitely sign up for their newsletters to be the first to know. Check out Hollywood Forever’s site to see what bands are performing there… another fantastic LA must.

Enjoy the pics!
